Rapanui - Ethical Threads for Mountain Biking
Rapanui is an eco fashion company based on the Isle of Wight; they are a band of young people that have created cool eco clothing inspired by action sports. The clothing is extremely durable, comfortable, stylish and last but not least eco-friendly, perfect for ragging trails on a
mountain bike.
Rapanui is an eco fashion brand created by two brothers who at the time had left university with just £200 worth of savings and decided if they can't find a job, make one. They both had a passion for extreme sports and decided to create an eco-action sports wear brand. Rapanui make clothing from organic natural fabrics in a Fair Wear Foundation audited, wind powered factory, the clothing is made from very durable natural materials which have some unique properties such as being kind to skin and extremely breathable. The idea is to make their eco t-shirts, hoodies, pants and socks as sustainable as possible, and as styled up as the brands we know and love.
"It's not that people don't care about the impact of clothing, it's just they don't know. At Rapanui we want to make it easy for people to see where their clothing comes from and how it is made, so people can make informed choices" says Mart Drake-Knight, Rapanui designer.
Rapanui recently won the Sustainable Business Awards 2010, and is a finalist in the RSPCA good business awards, whilst the founders are listed on the Top 100 list of young entrepreneurs. All quite remarkable considering that Rapanui was created with £200 from a university dorm.
Rob Drake-Knight said "we want to send a message to young people that, even in a recession, you can be a success whether you wear suits or flip flops."
